Volunteering at The China Care Home-- Day 8, Summer 2010

Day 8 by Audrey Keller

Early this morning after a delicious breakfast we headed up to the China Care Home. I started off the morning working with the babies, which is always fun. Toddlers can be a lot to handle first thing in the morning. There is honestly nothing as cute as a toothless baby smile. Even the babies who have cleft lip and palates have such beautiful smiles!

After spending time with the babies in the special care nursery, I headed in to visit my toddler friends in the family housing units. I spent most of my time playing with one very rambunctious little boy, who you would never know was born with a heart defect. He has come to be one of my favorites. When you walk in the room he has this charming way of running up to you with arms widespread for a hug, and loves to spend time sitting in my lap and playing with the toys.

Lunchtime was delivered by the friendly China Care cook, which for the day was noodle soup.  All of the staff here are so nice and even though I cannot understand what they say all the time, they always smile and make hand gestures to try to help me understand.  I am so happy to be here and be a China Care volunteer.  I will miss all of the children when I go, but will always remember the time I spent here with them making them laugh.
