Volunteering at The China Care Home-- Day 7, Summer 2010

Day 7 by Parker Masselink

Today Meredith and I were able to travel to the local children’s hospital with Lily, China Care’s associate director, to visit the babies currently there receiving medical treatment.  What I learned is that China Care is able to receive every bit of service that the children deserve.

Our first order of business was to take one little girl to get an ultrasound of her heart.  There was a fairly long line of people waiting for various check-ups, but because China Care partners with the hospital, we were able to bypass the line and go straight to the ultrasound room.

Inside the room, the head surgeon and a few other doctors all took a look at the girl’s heart.  What they found is that she has a hole in one part of the heart, and they discussed a medical plan for her to receive surgery.  After the ultrasound, we took our tiny charge to get blood drawn and get an X-ray.  Both went very quickly. We then paid a visit to the China Care babies who were there with their nannies comforting them.

Although this Chinese hospital was not the same as the hospitals in the US I have visited, I was very impressed with the layout.  I got the impression that everything worked like an assembly line, both organized and precise.  China Care is fortunate to have this hospital so close to the China Care home.
