Medical Program

Many of the orphans in our China Care Children's Homes have birth defects that can be corrected or alleviated with proper medical treatment or surgery. Because we choose to do only smaller, simpler procedures in the local hospitals, these children are sent to one of China Care's Medical Children's Homes when further treatment is necessary. China Care's Medical Children's Homes are currently located in the capital city of Beijing and the southern city of Dongguan. Here we have access to China's top specialists in cardiology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, pediatrics, rehabilitation and other specialties. The children are cared for in the Medical Children's Home while they are receiving treatment. When a child is admitted to the hospital for testing or surgery, one of our childcare staff accompanies the child 24 hours a day to ensure continuity of care.

Our Medical Program staff accompany the baby on each visit to the doctor or hospital, much as a parent would do for their own child. These Medical Program coordinators advocate for the child and explore all treatment options. They seek second opinions when necessary and obtain discounts whenever possible. Our Medical Program coordinators work together with the hospital to decide the best treatment plan for each child, and they monitor his progress during his entire stay in Beijing. Working together with the Medical Program director, these coordinators obtain the best possible medical treatment at the lowest possible cost.

If you are interested in helping to fund treatment for a baby in need, please visit our Project Proposals page to see the details about the children who currently need help.

After a baby has completed his medical treatment, he is cleared for foster care by the Medical Program director. A long term care plan is drawn up that includes specific instructions for the foster parents in the use of medications, orthotics/prosthetics, physical therapy and other special care instructions. Any follow-up medical treatment (additional surgeries or examinations) is scheduled at this time. The baby is then returned to the local China Care Children's Home in the city where he came from. After a short period of rest and recovery, the baby is ready for a family of his very own. Read about China Care's Foster Care Program to learn more!
