Many of you are familiar with Maddie (Jun Ping) and Noah’s (Tian Duo) story. For those who are not, my husband James and I met them in 2006 when they were both lively toddlers in the China Care program, and we were immediately smitten.

Age: 1 year

At the end of last year, when she was 6 months old, tiny YeWen arrived at the China Care Home from the Chuzhou Welfare Institution struggling for every breath she took. She had complex congenital heart defects: Tetralogy of Fallor (four heart defects that affect the heart’s structure), a hole between the upper two chambers of her heart, and lung complications as well.

Age: 2 years

HuiJun came to the China Care Home last year, a 1-year-old little girl who was born with a cleft lip and palate, a deformation in her left hand, and no right arm. In just 10 months, HuiJun underwent three surgeries.

Her first surgery was to repair her cleft lip. After HuiJun was discharged from the hospital, she recuperated quickly under the loving eye of her foster mom.

Age: 2 years

FangFang is a 2-year-old boy born with retinoblastoma (eye cancer). When he came to the China Care Home last August, his left eye was atrophied, which required removal, but we were hoping the right eye could be saved.

Zhuangzhuang

Age: 10 months

On New Year’s Day, a journalist from Henan Province found an abandoned struggling newborn baby and took him to the local orphanage. At the orphanage the pale, skinny baby baby was given the name ZhuangZhuang, “be strong,” which reflected their hope that the tiny baby with health problems would find the inner strength to overcome his obvious physical frailty.

Zhuang Wei

Age: 2 Years

ZhuangWei is a boy from Jiangsu Province who had retinoblastoma, a type of eye cancer that takes a long time to cure and needs several rounds of chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is grueling for adults never mind little ZhuangWei, who started treatment when he was only 16 months old.

JiaNi (“NiNi”) is much loved by our staff – no one can resist her chubby and rosy cheeks. We especially treasure her every smile because we all know how much she has had to struggle in her short life.

Yan when he arrived at China CareYan was born with a hole in his heart and was abandoned in Shanxi province when he was just a month old. China Care took him into our home and provided the critical surgery to repair his heart.

Age: 2 1/2 years

LiJi was born in the spring of 2007 and abandoned shortly after somewhere in Inner Mongolia, a region in the north of China. The local orphanage sent him to China Care when he was three months old, hoping we could help correct his birth defects – one of his eyes was smaller than normal and he had a deformed thumb.

On March 7, 2006, Zhi was born with a hole in his heart. As luck would have it, he came to China Care and three months later we provided the surgery to repair his heart. He is now a healthy two-and-a-half year-old boy named Nathaniel and lives in upstate New York with his adoptive family, Darlene and Clinton Carroll and big sister AnNi Rose.
